Hi all,
Well here goes the first of many chats. My one daughter - I have three - who is now 2 years old wakes up every two hours at night and cries. Now taking her off the bottle is hard because it stops her from crying but the negative effect it is having on her is that it is busy giving her bottle teeth.
For those that do not know - Bottle teeth - is when your child falls asleep at night with a bottle in the mouth which then slowly drips onto the back of the front teeth casuing them to rot due to the sugar content in formulas.
How do I get her to stop this crying at night as during the day it goes well without a bottle until sleepie time then all hell breaks lose. |

| I'm not a mom but why cant you take the bottle away and replace it with a dummy and surely the bottle should only contain water not juice as its only a comforter at sleep time? |

Try going cold turkey, take it away all together. You'll only lose a few nights sleep. But will never look back. Also good for when you start potty training. You'll have less wet beds if they dont drink thru the night. |

What I normally do that works for me - I kept the first two small bottles she had when she was born, with number 2 teets. I dont put anything in the bottles, no juice, no milk, nothing.
Let her / him fall asleep with a bottle of milk. Then when the child is asleep, quickly replace the bottle with one of the small bottles that has nothing in it.
They only need to feel the bottle in their hand and feel the teet in their mouth to be comforted. I normally leave one next to her in the bed if she is out cold.
I also use the carry chair that you used when she was small to allow her to fall asleep with her bottle of milk first. She is 19months old now, and a little big for it, so I am using foam to seat her in it. I place her in her cot once she is asleep.
I keep the second little bottle handy, also empty, incase she starts crying at night, then I normaly run to her to pop the second one in her mouth before she wakes completely and tuck her back into bed. I then take the first one, rinse the teet and place it back on the cupbourd next to her incase I need to swop again.
She is currently sleeping through the nights, its just evey now and then that she starts crying that I need to swop the bottles. Once in a while she might wake up for what every reason.
Also make sure she/he is warmly dressed, because they have a tendancy of kicking off the blankets during the night.
I dress mine in a long sleeve vest, a poloneck jersey, and another jersey or fleese type of longsleeve top with a cap. A boy's warm tracksuit pants, mine is wearing 3-4year old ones, because I dont want it to be too tight on her. With socks.
You can also make sure that her nappy is absorbent enough to help her sleep through.
Also check that her nose is clear, I use earbuds. If they have difficulty breathing because the nose is congested, they will have difficulty sleeping.
I also use soothing music in her room to help her sleep. It will drown out any noises from in and outside the house.
Let me know if you have any further difficulties. email me at enquiries@comfy-child.com |

Wow what a response, I have taken all your information to heart and can now say that I am a proud owner of a child that does not need a bottle anymore.
Thank you for all the advice - It was great. |

Hi there, i have 5 kids and my baby is 5yrs old i took all of them of the bottle at the age of 18mnts.I made a big hole in the tiet and everytime he wanted to drink it made a mess,so i told him that it is broken and that he must through it in the bin.He threw it away and everytime he asked for it i say remember baby you threw it away it's kaka.He cried for 3 nights just at bed time for a short while and after that he was okay.
Let her sleep with you in the bed it is comforting until she stops crying.
I hope this info will help
Good Luck |

Stopping cold turkey is the answer, according to my neighbor. (She worked as a nanny for 2 decades, so there).

My daughter was very bad with the bottle and dummy - she would wake up all times of the night.
Our local Dr. told us that our bodies are made not to have food and liquids at night, she is only crying for the bottle cause that is what she is used to - Take her off it. it will be only a few nights that she will cry, but she will eventually get over it. And then you can ALL sleep peacefully. |
