A current trend on Gumtree, in the Jobs Offered section, are the number of bogus recruiters offering jobs. Being very cautious in just sending off my CV and personal info, I always enquire about the job first. I encountered that the e-mail address which was used in the Ad and which I sent my query to, has a response sent from 2 different "recruiters" referring to my response to their vacancy listed. But they fail to answer my question and they did not mention which vacancy they are referring to. They simply ask me to e-mail my CV, photo and certificates to them. Luckily I am suspicous of nature and could easily spot a scam, but what about innocent people who hopefully and in good trust forward
their CV's and docs.

I have reported Ads posted by the following recruiters:

Labour Solutions Recruitment
G.E.N Recruitment
YWork Recruiters

Whenever I enquire about a particular vacancy, I get a response back from all three. No contact detail or existing website! Another give-away is that they all use a free e-mail address e.g. gmail or yahoo in their ad.

Please people, do your homework - ask questions and don't just blindly send off your CV. There are people like the above-mentioned who take advantage of people desperately looking for a job, wasting their time and money!

What also bothers me, is that Gumtree always encourages us to use the "Report Ad" link, which I do all the time. Yet the Ads remain, unless I submit a ticket for each of those Ads! Evil or Very Mad

I just got a response from two "recruiters", for the same enquiry which I posted via the Gumtree link. The same e-mail, both requesting my CV, ID, photo and Certificates. It seems to me like this is one person or a group, all with different e-mail addresses to put people off trail. Not easy to trace, since they use gmail and other free e-mail addies.

People, please do not send your CV via the Gumtree link. First reply via the link only and ask some questions. Soon you will get hundreds of responses back, but none of them have actually answer your query.

At least now you will have the e-mail header which the e-mail originates from.

(( they scams. They then want u to send your cv to their 'fax to email number' . Fax to emailing is a scam, because u paying R2 per pg. .where as half that goes into the fake recruiter ppl. Never fax to email unless they a known company with land line numbers and other information included. Fax to email = money scams))

You got it right. That is exactly what they do with your CV.
Your CV contains ALL the sensitive information that they need like your full names, date of birth, ID number, address, previous work history - In short, everything they need to make a false ID document.
Once they have that, they will then apply for credit everywhere.

The person above deleted his/her post later, but stated that he/she sent a CV to a bogus job offering and was wondering what they do with the information.

Hi. Thanks very much for your post. I was nearly caught out with this one. It's amazing how people can take advantage of others when they know the situation is probably difficult for the one they're scamming. I'm just about ready to delete my profile from Gumtree completely. I find the site has become riddled with corrupt people and there's very little legitimacy left on it nowadays.

An excellent way of dealing with these buggers is to expose them on the web. The minute you type something on a public forum e.g. Gumtree, everyone can read it when they google. So when someone say for instance google the name G.E.N Recruitment, they will not find their website, because they don't exist. But instead the googler will pick up on the posts on Gumtree or wherever and will be pre-warned.

The latest scam I've dealt with, was from the e-mail address name@webpost.co.za. I checked up on this e-mail address and found that there are more than one domain linked to a central "recipient". That explains what I received 7 similar responses on my single enquiry, all from different "Recruiters". They don't answer my query, but refer to my "interest" in a position listed on Gumtree. They request my CV, copy of my ID and other certificates to be faxed off to an 086- number. They try to put job seekers off-track by changing the name every time.

I still am not too sure what their objective is. It can either be a case of identity theft, because you offer them all your personal info on a plate. It can also be that they are making money from innocent and gullable job seekers. When people fax all these pages of info to some 086 fax numbers, they pay quite a lot per page which could actually generate some income for the recipient, as they receive a percentage from the total costs. This explains why up to 7 e-mails are sent to the job seeker who enquired about the position listed. The more times he/she faxes off a CV and other docs, the money goes to one central scammer or maybe a syndicate.

I am glad to report that Gumtree succeeded in removing all scam job ads posted by (name)@webpost.co.za. However, as this Registrant has 22 different web domains, he (they) started using one of the other domains this week - i.e. (name)@jobwork.co.za. The Ads are not only listed in Cape Town, but when I googled jobwork.co.za I noticed Ads on practically every free site and posted all over South Africa! Although they seem difficult to track down because they alter between the various free domains, they have one central registration domain, which is fickor@mighty.co.za. This info was retrieved from the website where you can trace a domain registered as co.za. The minute you type in webpost.co.za or jobwork.co.za, it brings up the same Registrant's info! When you google further, you will see that 22 domains are registered for this specific Registrant. A few others I picked up on other websites, include name@phonemail.co.za; name@mastermail.co.za; name@webmail.co.za. No wonder they seem to get away with hundreds of scam jobs listed on Gumtree, IOL, Indeed, BestJobs and OLX. It is just too co-incidental that all those domains have the same Registrant Fickor Group Trust in Hermanus, but there is no further info on this "company" available. It appears that, besides the 22 different webdomains, they have several fake recruiters too.

Job seekers, PLEASE do not fax off your documents without sending an enquiry e-mail first! If the job is a scam listed by the same poster (s), you will receive up to 10 e-mails from different "recruiters" requesting that you fax off your docs to an 086-fax number! These recruiters include the following names: Yellow-Jackets Recruitment, Aggies, Terrapins, Prima Recruitment,G.E.N Recruitment, Southern Recruiters etc. etc. Don't fall for this scam - it seems that by receiving thousands of faxes per day, they are generating an income for them, scamming thousands of innocent, hopeful and desperate job seekers.

I've been on Maternity Leave for he last 5 months & the temp who was working in my place used my pc. She probably sent her CV off to these people. She no longer works here so I've been receiving emails from these people daily & I can't unsubscribe!!!! This is very painful, surely there's a way that we can have their email addresses blocked?

It depends on which Internet security program you use.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security which have a very effective spam filter and it also allows you the option to delete spam permanently without ever seeing it.

These spammers often use many different e-mail address, so one have to block all of them for effective results.

Unfortunately the temp has also fallen prey to this scammer whom I believe is behind all these bogus job ads placed on Gumtree, but most of all, on OLX.co.za. He uses 22 different e-mail addresses which is linked to one central domain. The minute things get too hot for him, he creates new domains. If you remove his bogus job ads on OLX, there is hardly any legit job ads left! He seems to get away with it, because innocent, gullible people still fax off their docs to the 086 number, without enquiring first.

The above "recruiter e-mails" are part of this whole scam. The minute you use the e-mail address in the ad to enquire, you get spammed with 4-7 e-mails from "recruiters" requesting you to forward your docs. The e-mails which they are sending from, like the 3 above, are also fake, not allowing you to forward your CV via e-mail, but instead forcing you to fax off your docs. I am 99% certain that he gets a percentage of the fee when people fax off hundreds of pages per day to the different 086 numbers he also has besides the number of e-mail domains.

I have alerted Gumtree about this and I am still working on OLX to permanently stop this scammer. Even if he is posting under different e-mail domains every day, he should be traceable via his IP address and machine number. Yesterday alone, he posted 50 bogus jobs all over the country. He is using the same font and abbreviations and the setup of his ads are all the same.

@Suayda -

I blocked all these e-mails, but once you block one or two of them, they use one of their other fake recruiter names and fake e-mail addresses e.g. Terrapins, Huskies Personnel, Prima Appointments, General Recruiters and Laboursolutions.

I think we can safely assume that identity theft is not part of this scam. I would rather say that this bugger is generating a cosy income for him - hence the 086-fax numbers that one has to send all docs to. This explains why the e-mail address of each of these fake recruiters bounces when one tries to reply or forward your CV. People automatically fax off their docs to the 086 number when the e-mail doesn't work.

Can you imagine the thousands and thousands of pages he receives every single day. He has bogus job ads placed in every free classifieds. When you google a specific e-mail address he uses, e.g. (name)@jobworks.co.za; (name)@prontomail.co.za; (name)@getmail.co.za; (name)@mastermail.co.za or one of the other 22, it will bring up all his ads posted every day, especially on OLX.
