I have worked in recruitment for over 30 years and retired 2 years ago. I had been working in the far East and returned to SA last year. I am bored with retirement now, you can only play so much golf. I am thinking of starting an agency specialising in placing more mature candidates. I am not sure where this will go or even if it would work. In fact i am not sure if it is even legal! I would like your thoughts on this, good or bad idea etc...
I guess this is the start of my market research. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks

Will

Absolutely a stunning idea! Recruitment agencies tend to look at job seekers between the ages 21 and 35 maybe and don't even consider people over 40, left alone over 45! What they don't realise, is that people over 40 and 45 have years of wonderful experience, they have settled in stable lifestyles and can still contribute to the success of any company.

Please do this Will, you will have plenty of top candidates standing in line. It is up to you to convince Companies to hire more mature people, instead of only settling for the younger age group.

Good luck.

I think it is an awesome idea!!! I have just turned 41 am a sales executive and got the shock of my life when I decided to look for another job. I think that employers have an idea that once you hit 40 you are over the hill! TIP: I have now added a photo to my CV so that they can actually see that I don't look 100 years old and that has at least got me an interview or two!! Very Happy

Shocked
Hiya-yup its a scary place to be -over the hill at 40.Ha ha.Check out all the job descriptions out there-employment agencies recon a mature candidate is 35.
Ho hum.Have to survive the global meltdown some how.Unfortunately the reason most companies want young folk is that they havent yet learnt by bitter experience the many wonderful ways to be shafted by the people who employ them.
The sure fire way to be over the hill and bitter and twisted Razz

... I doubt existing job structures will have much available, but the creation of groups of specialists that deliver service from that age structure could have amazing potential. I am oh so not a business person and finding a job is practically impossible. It does not matter what your skills are... The fact that employers do not discriminate on basis of age.. etc.... is a fallacy, discrimination is rife.. and work is scarce... I have seen another website overseas where there is even new careers and studies for people over 50... nothing seems to be available like that in South Africa.

I absolutely agree; I am over 50 and decided to test the waters of the job market and I must say it's scary. Therefore a recruitment agency for seniors who are young-at-heart and can give the younger generation a run for their money, is an awesome idea.
Keep us posted on developments.

For someone who claims the experience as above and then naively speculating about your scheme's 'legality' does sound a bit odd. What possibly could be 'illegal'? Why don't you register a CC, consult with an attorney and accounting professional and register for income tax and VAT and there will be nothing 'illegal' concerning your proposed activities.

I have unfortunately been retrenched since January 2011 and find all recruiters give the older person a miss. So with the response you have got on this subject, please let me be one of those you find a job for. I will certainly be most grateful. You must do this and I will even play golf with you.DEREK

Any help for people in this age group would be welcome. Recruiters and employers do seem to discriminate against those over 50 years of age. Youth is better than experience, that is the inference given. I do hope I will hear details & address of the proposed website. Add my Email to your mailing list: ********

At 50 with 32 years working experience I am unable to find employment after being retrenched from a company of 6 years in the position of Office Manager. The recruitment agencies put you through all the tests which you pass with flying colours but thats where it ends. You can apply for positions which appear suited but you get no response from them or any employers for that matter. I think your idea is brilliant but finding positions for these 45+ people is where the problem comes in. We are looked upon as over the hill and brain dead! Good Luck! I would love to be on your list of prospective candidates!
