These poor people get flooded out every winter.

Have any of them thaught to start building their shacks on stilts so the water, which they know is coming, cant get into their houses.

I noticed from newsclips that the onlyone that was high and dry was a dog, sound asleep, on a stack of pallets.

It sounds silly but is obviously brilliant and done all over the world. Not only keep them out of the water but create an outdoor shady spot. The African psyche is fatalistic to a large degree though and getting them to implement this is something is. Maybe someone involved with shack rebuilding could help implement this. I dont think Loco would mind if they took the idea to be their own, as long as it got the job done.

great idea, like they do in India and China.........only problem is we will end up with even less telkom lines. I haven't had a landline for 2 years now because they keep stealing the cables.........now they are getting lazier and just use a chainsaw to drop the poles to get to the cables............would make good slilts for the houses methinks!

Jeeez.... they'd end up making their fires under the house!!! as if there aren't enough shack fires already!

Apart from that - how could they possibly afford a chainsaw, when they have to spend all effort and brainpower to install a floor

And if the'd do it and nothing untoward happens - just wait for the south-easter to get a large scale display of the domino effect
